So… I was watching episode 19 of Beautiful World again, and I got to this adorable scene. Usually, I fangirl over Latvia (he’s just so cuuuuuute and huggable-looking~), but I noticed something. Latvia’s book has a word on the cover, and on the spine. I found a screenshot without subtitles, and discovered that the word was ‘リルケ’, or ‘Riruke’ in katakana (I’ve been taking Japanese for three years, so I make it a habit to try to translate what I can), which translates into English as ‘Rilke’.
So, I was puzzled. What the heck was ‘Rilke’? When I Googled it, it turns out that it is the surname of the German poet, Rainer Maria Rilke. Interested, I looked him up, and found this quote describing his poetry (taken from PoemHunter.com): “His haunting images focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety…” That definitely reminds me of something Latvia would read. It’s been canon in the manga for some time that Raivis reads and loves romance novels and poetry, but now, that trait appears in the anime! And I am also happy that they chose to have him read Rilke’s material, too!(Check out his poems; I don’t even like poetry that much, and I thought they were great to read!)
…If everyone knew this already, oops, XD. I just never saw it being discussed on here…
